PREPARING FOR THE PROGRAM
During the program, you will be guided through the diverse daily schedule by our friendly staff, so you will never have to worry about what comes next. You can just sit back, relax and enjoy the ride!
However, you should come prepared to talk and to share experiences. Many volunteers bring photos, magazines, instruments or other materials that help them to share their experiences, talents or hobbies. As well as these things, we always encourage volunteers to give presentations during the variety hour. As a presentation you could teach a song or dance, share a unique interest or hobby, speak about your culture or an interesting place that you have visited, tell a joke or simply share anything that makes you smile.
TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION
Your expenses will include travel to the transportation departure point, where we will have a vehicle available on the first morning of the program to bring you to the hotel. You will also be taken back on the last day of the program. This may mean having to arrange for your own accommodation before or after the program, depending on your travel plans.
The pickup location will depend on the specific program and will be assigned once you have gone through the application process. We will also assist you in locating the appropriate travel information to reach the departure point.
DURING THE PROGRAM
During the program, you should have very few expenses as your room and meals are paid for. However, some people may want to have a drink at the bar after dinner or a snack between meals (although the meals are plentiful, so this is probably unlikely!) so a little extra cash may be helpful.
What is not included in the hotel:
- Between meal snacks and refreshments
(Water and wine are provided during the meals. Soft drinks and drinks after meals are at your own cost.)
- Laundry Services
- Phone Calls
HOW TO GET TO THE HOTEL
HOW TO GET TO THE PROGRAM (if you don’t have your own transportation)
If you do not have your own transportation, you will be expected to make your own way to Gijón. From there, we will provide transportation to the program venue.
How to get to Gijón:
From Madrid and Barcelona there are regular plane, train and bus connections with Asturias. The bus company, ALSA has connections throughout Spain and is the lowest cost option. The train (RENFE) is also a good choice and a bit more comfortable than the buses. Both the buses and trains will take you directly to Gijón.
Most of the flights to Asturias are through Iberia. Please note that some websites may refer to the Asturias airport as the “Oviedo” airport, as the international code is OVD, however the airport is not actually located in the city of Oviedo. From the airport, you will need to catch a bus that will take you to the center of Gijón. The buses leave frequently and the cost of the ride from the airport to Gijón is approximately 7.50€.
